Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice

Filling and Glaze Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2-3 tablespoons orange juice (for glaze)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warmed milk. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  • Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, orange zest, and orange juice to the dry ingredients. Stir until combined.
  • Gradually add the remaining flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Shaping and Baking

  • After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Spread softened butter on the rolled dough, then sprinkle more granulated sugar and a touch of orange zest over the top.
  • Roll the dough tightly into a log, then slice it into 12 equal pieces.
  • Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover with a cloth again, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  • While the rolls bake, whisk together the powdered sugar and orange juice for the glaze.
  • Once the rolls are done, let them cool for a few minutes before drizzling the glaze over the top.

Notes

For best results, use fresh organic oranges for the zest and juice. Consider variations like adding spices or different citrus fruits.
