  • 2 large eggs Room temperature
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice Freshly squeezed
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest From fresh oranges
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pure vanilla for best flavor

  • 1 cup boiling water Thins the batter

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup room-temperature butter For frosting
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cups cocoa powder For frosting
  • 1 cup orange juice For frosting
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest For frosting

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, Dutch cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Mixing

  • Add the eggs, fresh orange juice, vegetable oil, orange zest, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for two minutes until smooth.
  • Carefully stir in the boiling water until well blended.

Baking

  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans and spread gently with a spatula.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  • Once baked, cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting

  • Beat together room-temperature butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, orange juice, and remaining orange zest until smooth for the frosting.
  • Once the cake layers are completely cooled, frost the top of one layer and stack the second on top, frosting the top and sides.

Notes

Garnish with orange zest or a dusting of cocoa. Pair with whipped cream or ice cream for added indulgence.
