Preparation

  • Rinse the fresh cranberries under cold water and remove any damaged or overly soft berries.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed cranberries, sugar, and fresh orange juice.

Cooking

  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir continuously. Cook for about 10-15 minutes until the cranberries burst and release their juices.
  • Monitor the sauce and stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Cook until most cranberries have burst and the sauce reaches a syrupy consistency.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the fresh orange zest.

Cooling and Storing

  • Allow the sauce to cool to room temperature to thicken and allow flavors to meld.
  • Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or in the freezer for up to three months.

Notes

Serve with roasted meats, as a spread for sandwiches, or over desserts. Experiment with spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for variations.
