Ingredients
  

For the Cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure it's at room temperature.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 piece egg Use room temperature.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour Fluff before measuring.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure it's creamy.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk Adjust for consistency.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (optional) For colored frosting.
  • Sprinkles (optional) For decorating.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  • Use a cookie scoop or your hands to form dough balls about 2 inches in diameter and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them a few inches apart.
  • Slightly flatten each dough ball with the palm of your hand or a glass.

Baking

  • Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers look soft and puffy.
  • Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.

Frosting

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until well combined.
  • Add the milk and vanilla extract. Beat until fluffy and smooth. Adjust the consistency with more milk if needed.
  • If using food coloring, add it now until you reach your desired shade.
  • Spread the frosting over the cooled cookies and sprinkle with your favorite toppings if desired.

Notes

Store cookies in an airtight container for freshness. They can last up to one week at room temperature or two weeks in the refrigerator. For longer storage, freeze unfrosted cookies in a freezer-safe container.
